Is Being a Yacht Broker a Dying Profession? Maybe… But Maybe Not.

With more and more websites allowing private sellers to publish ads - and social media platforms like our Facebook Group Catamarans For Sale growing fast - how is the poor old yacht broker coping?

Stateside commissions are still fairly high at around 10%, and some European brokers charge the same… then add another 21% VAT on top. I know, ha! I’m sure you’re not losing sleep over whether your broker is living off breadcrumbs thrown out for the birds… but the truth is, we still have our place.

With the rise of the internet, social media, and now AI, the traditional yacht broker’s business has taken a serious hit. The world has shrunk - European brokers, private buyers, and sellers are now all fishing in the same global pond as the U.S., and vice versa.

If you’re very careful, buying or selling a boat privately can be done. And yes, we’re happy to help - especially if you’re a member of our platform: www.catamaransforsale.net

But remember - you’re dealing with a valuable asset. Sometimes more expensive than your first house.

And just like property, ownership transfers can get complicated. There are people out there - on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific - ready to shaft you if given the chance. That’s where a buyer’s or seller’s broker comes in. We’re supposed to protect you from those situations.

The Risks of the "Simple" Sale

You might think: “I advertise my boat, I find a buyer, I sell it. Job done.”

If only it were that simple. Oh wait… everyone is doing it.

Anyone with a mobile phone can call themselves a broker these days. Maybe they’ll proudly say they’re a member of the A.B.A. - the Amazing Boats Association - where pretty much anyone can join… if they pay enough.

The reality? Things go wrong. And they go wrong more often than you’d think.

Real-World Horror Stories

  • I came across one catamaran registered in four different registries - with four different “owners”, each believing they owned the whole boat. Each paid for engines, repairs, moorings… and each received three years of terrible charter returns. The charter company? Disappeared into the sunset on a stolen yacht.
  • Another Spanish-registered catamaran had fines, liens, and unpaid taxes exceeding the value of the boat - all of which transfer to the next owner.
  • Then there was the case where a boat was sold privately by someone who didn’t even legally own it - it was held by a company with three directors.
  • Or the guy who sold a catamaran co-owned with his ex-wife… by forging the paperwork. She still owns half.

I could go on. There are plenty more like this.

Why Use a Broker?

The point is - there’s a lot of gravel to sift through before you find gold. A good broker does that sifting for you. We check title, registration, and paperwork to make sure the sale is clean and legal.

Because buyers and sellers? They get complacent. Documents go missing. Or never existed in the first place. And without the right paperwork, a vessel can become virtually unsellable.

The AI Factor

And now, we’re being taken over by robots. Before Arnie lands naked on your deck shouting “I’ll be back,” remember this - anyone with a computer can now publish a slick, AI-generated listing designed to part you from your hard-earned cash.

Yes, we use AI too. But we’re keeping it real. We’ve been around a long time, and we’re not handing things over to an offshore call center just yet.

You can use us as your buyer’s broker, seller’s broker - at a competitive rate. Or go it alone if you prefer. If you’re a member of our platform, we’re here to help either way.

Just be careful out there. It’s a minefield.
