Originally designed to help disperse large amounts of water from the bow area, they reduce the risk of burying the bows in heavy seas and improve buoyancy when conditions get rough. Graham highlights concerns that some modern cruising catamarans are reducing trampoline space in favor of larger solid decks, potentially compromising safety. Performance bluewater catamarans such as Outremer and Gunboat continue to rely on large trampolines for this reason.
